The research "Class and Social Structure of the Population of Czechoslovakia in 1984" was conducted by the Federal Statistical Bureau, in cooperation with the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The goals of this study were to collect information about social structure and about mobility in Czechoslovakia and to investigate opinions and attitudes about family values, social differences, social level an living standards and work and science-technical improvement. The survey was based on the representative sample (18,829 respondents) of the Czechoslovak population of the age 15+. The study included The Survey of Attitudes conducted on an independent subsample of 4.000 individuals. The study is related to the research "Class and Social Structure of the Population of Czechoslovakia 1978" in the matter of topics, methodology and organization.

This research was focused on educational and occupational mobility, it explored in detail social status in the time of the research. Questions about personal income and non-work activities were included in the questionnaire. The structure and stratification of households were also the field of thist survey. One part of the questionnaire investigated demographic and social composition of households, its income, facilities and housing situation. The research in 1978 was particularly focused on the character of work, managing functions, department of work, social position of children, place of residence and geographical mobility.
